The Health Promotion Competencies and Workforce Development Working Group (CWDG) is a specialised network of IUHPE, comprising experts from 16 EU member States and other 13 international advisors.
The CWDG aims to improve the competency and effectiveness of health promotion at practice, policy and academic levels, both within the EU and globally, recognizing that a competent workforce, with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to translate policy, theory and research into effective action is critical to the development of health promotion and the reduction of health inequalities.
To do so, the CWDG builds on the positive outcomes of the European Project CompHP-Developing Competencies and Professional Standards for Health Promotion Capacity Building in Europe, funded by the EU (2009-2012,www.iuhpe.org/?page=614), which has developed, through consensus building with key stakeholders, core competencies, professional standards and an accreditation system for health promotion, now ready to be implemented at the European level.
The CWDG aims to fulfill its mission by advocating for and actively contributing to the implementation of the competency-based standards agreed upon during the CompHP Project, both in the member States already involved and in the EU as a whole.
By building the accreditation system for health promotion practice, education and training in Europe, the CWDG aims also to create a European model for quality assurance of health promotion workforce development, which could serve as best practice worldwide.
The CWDG reflects and contributes to IUHPE`s mission: promote global health and contribute to the achievement of equity in health between and within countries of the world. The IUHPE fulfills its mission by operating an independent, professional network of people and institutions to encourage the free exchange of ideas, knowledge, know-how, experiences, and the development of collaborative projects, working groups and networks, at global and regional levels.
The IUHPE supports and guarantees the financial and technical capacity of the CWDG.


EPHA is a leading NGO advocating for better health for everyone living in Europe. Our mission is to bring together the public health community to provide thought leadership and facilitate change; to build public health capacity to deliver equitable solutions to European public health challenges, to improve health and reduce health inequalities. Our key role is to promote health in the European Union at the highest levels of policy making across the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council.

80 million people still live in poverty in the EU, and poor living conditions, low income, poor employment conditions and unhealthy diets due to being unable to afford to buy healthy food are all key determinants of health. In addition, many of the key determinants of health lie outside of the control of individual citizens, such as how healthcare systems are managed, how food production in the EU is organized and how trade regulations enable or discourage healthy food choices and how pharmaceutical policies and the cost of medicines are regulated, for example.

EPHA's proposal for an operating grant under a Framework Partnership Agreement covers core operating costs for actions that contribute to the four objectives of the Third Health Programme. EPHA's workplan covers 4 strategic aims: improve overall population health and healthy life years, strengthen European health systems for better patient outcomes and reduced inequalities, and support institutional and policy frameworks that promote health and to strengthen and increase effective public health.

Health in all Policies, prevention-promotion-protection, reducing health inequalities and solidarity are central tenets of EPHA's workplan and are reflected in our approaches to working inter alia on food systems, trade and EU governance. Decreasing health inequalities is a core value that we endeavor to mainstream in all activities. Actions in the 2015 workplan reflect the final year of EPHA’s current strategic plan, and this year will be crucial for setting the 2016 to 2020 strategy.


The strategic objective of the project is to improve the health of migrants and communities affected by migration and, therefore, to tackle existing health gaps. The project’s goal is to enhance the understanding of the complex relationship between health and population mobility.
1) Follow-up and build on recent European initiatives in migration health. In particular, the project will take into consideration the migration health-related conferences and consultations of 2007 and develop synergies with European-level migration health projects currently being implemented.
2) Create a forum for discussions among experts on health and migration. The project seeks to bring together academics, national authorities, representatives of international organizations and NGOs and enable them to exchange their expertise, to discuss concrete cases, identify best practices and draft policy recommendations. The participants will also identify areas in which more data needs to be collected and analysed as well as areas where more research needs to be conducted.
3) Enable EU Member States to learn from each others’ practices and foster dialog among academic institutions, multiple stakeholders in governments, the European Commission, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. The project seeks to encourage these multidisciplinary stakeholders to develop action points for integrating the project’s recommendations into health and related strategies at the national and EU levels. This widened involvement will support a multi-pronged approach beyond the traditional target audience of health professionals.
4) Disseminate widely the final report of the workshop results and consultation conclusions to key stakeholders for migration health issues.


To develop a training programme in risk assessment based on common European criteria, easily adoptable by institutions across Europe, and focusing on risk assessment methodology and procedure. TRISK fills an important need in the training of toxicologists into areas of risk assessment by establishing a clear and recognized definition of training criteria and a recognition mechanism to qualify risk assessors.


The project will generate new and assess existing evidence to establish tools and best practices, and to define core capacities for the specified areas which are likely to be applicable and acceptable throughout the EU.

