General objective
The present proposal`s main objective consists of utility analysis (cost-effectiveness) in terms of cost per Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY) saved in two fields: 1) Three population interventions (and their combinations) designed to prevent coronary artery disease incidence aimed at reducing smoking, dyslipidaemia, and hypertension population prevalence, and 2) optimal use of coronary angiography and percutaneous intervention procedures in the management of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with special emphasis on the elderly (>64 years) to minimize the inequalities in this patient subgroup that has higher mortality than patients <65 years.

The EURHOBOP project is intended to provide the European Community with valid standardised monitoring systems that permit European hospitals to follow their trends in outcomes, based on the proposed adjusted indicators, and benchmark themselves in a European ranking.
The main focus of EUROHOBOP project is to define a set of in-hospital outcome indicators that determine the quality of health care in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients who are diagnosed at discharge with myocardial infarction (MI) or unstable angina (UA), in the following procedures: coronary angiography, thrombolysis, percutaneous intervention (PCI) and general management of the two conditions.
These indicators were obtained from European population-based MI-UA patient registry databases of more than 27,000 cases (Euro Heart Surveys ACS-I & II, ACSIS 2003 & 2005 and MASCARA 2005). This information permitted us to fit several functions to benchmark hospitals according to their actual in-hospital case-fatality as compared to their expected outcome rates, i.e., those adjusted for country, hospital and average patient characteristics in the index hospital assessed.

Are we ready to face it’?

(1) ‘Prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases and healthy lifestyles’
The conference will focus on the impact of the reduction and elimination of risk factors causing non-communicable disease and support the EU aims in the area of chronic diseases mitigation.
The objective is to point to the issue of non-communicable chronic diseases and healthy lifestyle and to nourish the discussion to foster the topic on the European level.

(2) ‘Alzheimer’s disease - the epidemic of the third millennium. Are we ready to face it?
The aim is to promote research, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of dementia. Our aim also is to strengthen the coordination within Member states of relevant policies in the field of dementia and discuss development of the future steps in the area of dementia.
