The European Multiple Sclerosis Platform Work Plan 2009 [EMSP Work Plan 2009]

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable and progressive disease of the central nervous system affecting the quality of life of more than 500.000 Persons with MS, their families and their carers across Europe. To date, no cure has been found for this complex, chronic and disabling condition.

The European Multiple Sclerosis Platform (EMSP) is the Pan European association working for and with more than 30 MS national member associations / organisations to achieve its goals. Being part of a worldwide community of Persons with MS (PwMS), we are committed to dialogue with, respect for and collaboration with other stakeholders in the field of MS, particularly the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF).

Our Vision

Throughout Europe, Persons with MS have equal access to the highest quality treatment and support they need to live their lives to the full.

Our Mission
...is to ensure the development and implementation of high quality standards of treatment and support for PwMS, their families and their carers throughout Europe, to allow them to lead their life independently and to recognise them as equal members of society.

The EMSP work priorities to achieve this mission are:

- to influence EU institutions and other decision-making bodies to improve the quality of life of PwMS
- to network with other European organizations in which the patient is central
- to provide MS member associations with information on relevant EU draft legislation and projects
- to develop and promote recommendations for improved medical treatment and rehabilitation to be implemented in the EU member states and other countries
- to encourage research of all kinds aiming at the benefit of PwMS
- to initiate and implement cross-border projects to improve the living conditions of PwMS, e.g. in the fields of therapies, employment, social security, infrastructure…
- to act as an information platform by exchanging information and best practices relevant to the work of the national MS member associations
- to enhance a general awareness on multiple sclerosis by informing and educating external audiences
- to support national MS societies both recent or long-established in Europe

EPHA Operating Grant Proposal 2016 SGA [EPHA SGA 2016]

The Annual Work Programme for 2016 of EPHA is drawn from the multiannual work programme 2015-2017 and builds on successes to date. EPHA’s activities in 2016 will continue to contribute to all four objectives of the Third Health Programme. EPHA has formally reviewed our Strategic Plan 2011-2015. We undertook a thorough consultation process involving Board members, Staff and the EPHA membership, and an analysis of EPHA’s operating environment, strengths and weaknesses. The EPHA membership formally approved the new Strategic Plan 2016-2020 at the Annual General Assembly on 4th September 2015. The Work Programme for 2016 reflects the revised strategy to define a clearer selection of priorities. This approach will enable EPHA to manage activities more effectively, encourage closer cooperation between members and across themes, and better monitor and evaluate our impact.EPHA’s overarching strategic objective remains: “To promote good health and wellbeing, to reduce disease and health inequalities in European policies and programmes”. Priorities selected are as follows:Under Aims 1 and 2 of the 3rdHP and EPHA Strategic Objective “Securing a Governance for Health Approach in Key EU Policies” (HiAP):- Agriculture and Food Policy including Alcohol, Tobacco and NCDs- EU Semester for Health- Healthy Trade Policy- Public Health and Research in the EU BudgetUnder Aims 3 and 4 of the 3rdHP and EPHA Strategic Objective “Strengthen EU Policies to Reduce Health Inequalities and Ensure Universal Access to Sustainable, Inclusive Health Systems”:- Universal and Fair Access to Medicines- Action on Antimicrobial Resistance- Inclusive E- and M-Health- HSPAEach of these areas has operational objectives, milestones, deliverables and impact indicators. The Work Programme 2016 also highlights organisational development objectives, particularly on cooperation with academia, communications and financial sustainability, which are priorities for 2016.

Empowering Hospital [Emp-H]

This multicentre project aims to foster health promotion interventions and environments suitable for patients, their families, and health professionals. The strategy is based on the Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH) framework with a strong emphasis on evidence based prevention.
The ultimate goal of this project is achievement of measurable improvements in population health through comprehensive promotion of healthy behaviours in diverse and complementary categories of individuals.
The project would focus on vulnerable patients presenting with acute manifestation of an underlying chronic condition, and on those they have stronger bonds with. Both patients and their families are assumed—in line with theory and evidence—to feel more susceptible to illness and more open to realize

Participation To Healthy Workplaces And inclusive Strategies in the Work Sector [PATHWAYS]

Individuals with chronic diseases and mental disorders often experience work-related problems, such as unemployment, absenteeism, reduced productivity and stigmatization in the workplace, leading to negative consequences at individual, national and European level. The rising prevalence of chronic diseases and mental disorders as well as the current economic crisis make this issue even more problematic, requiring action in terms of innovative strategies to improve the participation of these persons in the labor market. Unfortunately, this is hindered by a lack of knowledge of which strategies are available in the different European countries and their effectiveness, and a lack of clarity regarding the employment-related needs of these individuals, leading to gaps between what is offered and what is needed. Therefore, PATHWAYS aims a) to identify integration and re-integration strategies that are available in Europe and beyond, b) to determine their effectiveness, c) to assess the specific employment-related needs of persons with chronic diseases and mental disorders and d) to develop guidelines supporting the implementation of effective professional integration and reintegration strategies. Involvement in PATHWAYS of 12 partners with vast expertise in the area of chronic and mental conditions and employment from 10 different European countries allows to compare strategies between different European regions, taking into account cultural, social, and political differences. Stakeholder consultations, including advocacy organizations, employers, policy makers, international organizations, and European Union delegates, will provide useful insights as to the development and implementation of policy recommendations to improve their integration or reintegration into the workplace. In this way, PATHWAYS will provide the first steps to work towards a more inclusive labor market in which persons with chronic diseases and mental disorders can meaningfully participate.

European Register for Multiple Sclerosis - A tool to assess, compare and enhance the status of People with MS throughout the EU [EUReMS]

With the general aim of establishing a European Platform for systematic collection, exchange and analysis of longitudinal data on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in Europe, the EUReMS project is set up by an international consortium to address the currently unmet needs of People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS)that have been identified by the Consortium as:
-lack of knowledge on the causes of MS;
-scarce knowledge on effectiveness of MS disease modifying drugs;
-lack of data on the burden of MS in Europe.
EUReMS is underpinned by the following principles:
-it should be built on already existing national or regional data collections;
-it should involve and combine the expertise of clinicians, researchers and patient organizations;
-it should address questions at an international level;
-it should include highest available expertise concerning its organization and technical solutions;
-it should ultimately contribute to improve access for PwMS across Europe to evidence-based health care services and offer a cutting-edge research tool to gain further insight into various aspects of MS.
