1) SPRING SCHOOL : The main objective was to provide further education to health professionals in the area of smoking prevention and cessation as the experience had shown that surprisingly little up-to-date knowledge was available in the various organisations within Europe, and this course was the only occasion for that purpose at the European level. The Spring School was a valuable tool in construction effective and concrete networking in the enlarged EU in the area of public health. A total number of 50 participants took part in the programme every year and participation was encouraged from all the 30 countries participating in the EU Public Health Programme. New European-wide initiatives were awaited as a result of information flow and networking.
2) QUIT AND WIN : The Quit and Win – Don`t Start and Win (Quit and Win) Competition was a school, youth and community based smoking cessation and prevention programme that has been carried out annually in different European countries since 1999-2000. The target group was young people aged 14-24 years old. The main objective was to reduce smoking prevalence and consumption in young people.
3) SMOKEFREE CLASS COMPETITION was a school-based primary smoking prevention programme for pupils aged 11 – 14 years. The programme focused on the promotion of strategies focusing on health education. In particular, the programme aimed to: 1. prevent or delay the onset of smoking in adolescents, 2. motivate already smoking pupils to quit, 3. de-normalise smoking and establish non-smoking as the normal behaviour in pupils.
4) SMOKING CESSATION aimed to • Review and disseminate findings from Literature Reviews in Holland and Wales (Welsh review available at www.healthewales.org.uk) ; • Review and disseminate good practice from evaluated projects in Denmark, Holland and Wales in relation to adolescent smoking cessation in a range of settings across the EU ; • Identify the needs of each participating country and agree their objectives, methodology and evaluation processes (with the assistance of the external evaluator) for adolescent smoking cessation ; • Implement a pilot adolescent cessation programme in 12 countries
• Evaluate and report on key findings and make recommendations for future adolescent cessation activity.

ENSP is an independent, international non-profit association, which aims to develop a common strategy, amongst organisations active in smoking prevention and tobacco control in Europe, by sharing information and experience and through co-ordinated activities and projects.

Our vision is of a future where our fellow Europeans will not suffer the distress of ill health and early death because of tobacco. We want our children to be able to grow up without being targeted with messages that seek to lure them into a lifetime of addiction. We want all Europeans to be able to breathe clean air unpolluted by tobacco smoke.

As we increasingly communicate more freely and cross country borders more frequently, we realise that our individual countries do not stand alone; we feel the reverberations of change throughout Europe. Therefore, ENSP undertakes to use the best evidence of effectiveness in policy and practice to work together towards our common goal.
