Support for the development of an integrated and inter-sectoral health strategy in the EU. This was achieved through three work packages: facilitating information exchange and networking among NGOs working on specific health determinants (WP1), building capacity of CEE NGOs to participate in EU level health activities (WP2) and developing an effective platform of environment and health organisations (WP3).
- WP1: To identify cross-cutting themes common to several health determinants/risk factors; to develop and share (i.e., with grass-roots organisations) appropriate policy responses and models of good practice relevant to a variety of settings, such as schools, workplace etc.
- WP2: To increase the CEE NGOs knowledge of the EU structures and health policies. To develop their capacity to participate in European health networks and projects as well as raising the profile at EU level of CEE health status and specific health challenges. Integration of CEE NGOs into European health networks. Development of national platforms of public health NGOs in accession countries.
- WP3: To mobilise a critical mass of NGO to participate in the Environment and Health process. To stimulate evidence-based and effective policy analysis and proposals relevant to EU environmental responsibilities, such as pesticides, chemicals, air quality, noise pollution etc. To orchestrate NGO commitment in support of the Children`s E and H Action Plan.


1) To strengthen the operational preconditions of :
- the occupational health services (OHS),
- occupational safety and health (OS and H),
- other WHP-actors and
- the collaboration between them regarding WHP.
2) To support the development and the integration of WHP strategies in the:
- national health policies and strategies,
- national public health programmes,
- national WHP programmes, and
- good practice models for the implementation of feasible WHP.
3) Empowerment of the European Network for Workplace Health Promotion (ENWHP) as an effective collaboration framework for the development of WHP practices in Europe.


HEROES will bring various organisations involved in preventive health care, health promotion and road safety together to exchange information on working methods and share good practices on awareness-rising about road traffic risks for adolescents and young adults.


The Smokefree Class Competition Network was founded in order to contribute to the reduction of smoking among children and young people in Europe. The network’s activities are dedicated to
• strengthening co-operation among European professionals working in the field of tobacco prevention
• continuing with the Smokefree Class Competition in as many countries as possible
• evaluating and disseminating the results of the Smokefree Class Competition nationally and internationally.
The network partners are multi-disciplinary and have wide experience in the field of smoking prevention among children and young people. This fosters learning from each other and the sharing of best practice.



“The members of the ENWHP work together towards the vision ‘healthy employees in healthy organisations’. They are committed to the mission of developing and promoting good workplace health practice, which in turn contributes to a high level of health protection and sustainable economic and social development in Europe” (Article 1).
This vision is part of two broader visions at European policy level:
The EU Lisbon Agenda identifies the goal for this decade to develop the EU region ‚to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world capable of sustainable economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion‘. In this context workplace health promotion is part of the concept of quality in work with impacts on productivity, employment and social cohesion.

The second vision, although not on the same level on the EU agenda, is to develop a Europe of Health. European health policy supports the development of the national health care systems in the frame of established rules of subsidiarity, with a view to meeting the expectations of European citizens.

With its vision and mission, ENWHP contributes especially to the reduction of health inequalities, to the development of a European health information system and to improving important health determinants with impacts on all relevant settings in working and non-working life.


