This topic covers a wide range of issues related to the EU commitment to protect and promote health as a human right for all in the frame of the EC external cooperation. Support to the building of competent health systems, accessibility to basic health services, equity and solidarity values are just some of the principles guiding this cooperation. Maternal and child mortality, the crisis of human resources in the health sector, poverty related diseases and other issues may be addressed under this topic.

This webinar held on 10 April 2024 is one of a series of thematic conversations tailored to inform and support EU Delegation and programme staff on thematic issues highly relevant to their work on health, inequalities, and social protection.

    Duration: 1h 30min

This webinar is destined to EU staff in HQ and delegations.

Launched by EuropeAid in 2007 the “Tools and Methods Series” aims to structure the presentation of the methodological documents produced by the various thematic units, one of which the Inequalities. The collection includes three sub-collections: Guidelines, Reference Documents and Concept papers.

This 5-minute video in English, presents an overview of the income inequalities guide and ways to address inequality through development cooperation. The video starts with a well-rounded presentation of Inequality. It continues with the presentation of the Reference Document on inequalities. Finally, it explains how the EU development cooperation actions are addressing the issue of inequalities, through 4 core principles.

Funded by the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships (INTPA) and implemented by AFD, the Research Facility on Inequalities aims to strengthen knowledge on inequality in low- and middle-income (LMIC) countries. After the success of the first phase implemented in some thirty countries between 2017 and 2020, AFD and the EU have launched a second phase in 2021 in four countries: South Africa, Colombia, Indonesia and Mexico.

This webinar aims to support EU staff by building their capacity to link multiple policy areas to inequalities, adopting a series of principles to ensure that programmes and operations are designed with the underlying objective of reducing income inequalities in partner countries. It is built upon the experience of the Research Facility on Inequalities (CRIS No. 386-943) and uses as primary reference the Tools and Methods Series “Reference Document on Inequalities”.

These guidelines present a step-by-step method that can be used by EU staff to correctly implement the I-Marker within the first steps of the INTPA’s project cycle.

This documentation is restricted to EC Staff in HQ and DEL.

The Inequality Week was a 5-day online seminar, organised by the Inequality Team of G.4 Unit, supported by the Methodological and Knowledge Sharing Support (MKS).

The seminar took place online using the innovative platform HowSpace, which allows the immediate interaction with the participants through polls, surveys etc.

The videos are restricted to EC Staff in HQ and DEL.

The European Commission has made it a priority to address inequalities by building inclusive and sustainable societies. The size of the challenge and sensitivity of inequality, however, require transformative, unified action that can be achieved only by coordinated partnership by the Commission and the EU Member States. Recognising this challenge, the director generals of AFD, AECID, Enabel, BMZ and INTPA recently co-signed the Op Ed “Reducing Inequality: Why Working Together is No Longer Just an Option?”. The co-signatories of the opinion piece renewed the importance of pursuing stronger partnerships, based on coordinated responses, to reach international commitments and reduce inequality for all by building sustainable, inclusive, and resilient societies.

The objective of this reference document is to support the ongoing effort of the European Union (EU) to strengthen its approach to development cooperation to address inequalities in its partner countries. While recognising the importance of all forms of inequality, the document will focus primarily on income inequality, effective policy responses and how to address inequality in development cooperation.

                      Reference Document No 29

                      September 2021

The document highlights the EU's commitment to inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and tackling inequalities in its partnerships with non-EU countries. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive approaches, cooperation with partner countries, and resource mobilization to effectively address inequality.
